The Art of Building: Lessons from a Financial Startup Journey
The art of building something from scratch has a unique allure, especially when that creation has the capacity to change lives. As Elements' founder and CEO, I've been fortunate to watch our startup come to life and evolve, making a meaningful impact on financial advisors and their clients.
A startup's journey is far from linear: it's a dynamic, ever-changing path requiring grit, flexibility, and an unwavering passion for innovation. Throughout this adventure, I've learned many valuable lessons, but one of the most significant is embracing change and releasing preconceived notions.
In Elements' early stages, I, like any founder, had a vivid image of our ideal product. However, the startup realm often challenges our initial concepts and assumptions, as market dynamics, industry standards, and even team members, push us to rethink our approach. Letting go of "the thing you thought was the thing” can be challenging, but it's in these moments of dismantling and rebuilding that we unlock our creation’s true potential.
As we iterate, we shed unnecessary ideas and hone our focus, eventually creating something transformative, capable of impacting our users' lives.
But the real transformative experience lies not just in the final product, but in the journey itself. Participating in the genesis and evolution of a creation is an extraordinary experience. It's both humbling and exhilarating to stand at the innovation's core, witnessing our ideas touch hundreds of advisors and thousands of clients.
Leading this amazing team, my favorite aspect of our journey has been watching everyone grow, adapt, and contribute to the building process. This is a testament to the power of collaboration and a team united by a shared vision.
To my team, I express my deepest appreciation and admiration. Your intellect, courage, and commitment have not only shaped Elements, but have also molded me as a leader. Thank you for being the builders who transformed a vision into reality.
For those embarking on their own startup adventure or considering entrepreneurship, remember that the road to success is rarely direct. Embrace the twists, turns, uncertainties, and lessons that come from reevaluating and refining your ideas. Ultimately, it's the building process and the people you build with that make the journey truly worthwhile.
______________
The Builders
To avoid failure
The startup shifts, quickly
And so do our projects
You learn to say goodbye to the thing you thought was the thing
You deconstruct and re-construct
With fewer and fewer ideas
To bring into the world
A curated, transformative artifact
To manifest something
And to witness its origin
This is the gift
To participate in the creation of something truly innovative
My new favorite is watching all of you
A big hug and a salute
You're incredibly intelligent and you are brave
Thank you for being the builders
