Some people are freebirds
They struggle to be on a team
Everyone around them is broken
And they constantly criticize
Some team members lighten loads
And are accountable
They willingly accept projects
And report on them
The freebird wants freedom
Separation from the chaos of humans
Resisting ownership over results
And persisting to complain
The freebird may be uber-talented
And bring a powerful influence
Shining brightly, advancing vision
And creating beautiful art
So what’s a startup to do with this archetype?
Define expectations, patiently coach
Hold the freebird accountable
If it doesn’t improve, part ways
Organizations can be destabilized by freebirds
But if they endure the strain, and listen
The creative tension improves the product
And gives birth to more innovation
I’ve known a lot of freebirds
They’re frustrating, and volatile
And elemental…
I wonder if I’m a freebird.
